A Historic Election May Loom – but for Spending Only
The 2022 Oregon gubernatorial contest will be unique in several ways. As of publication, candidates for governor have spent over $21 million combined over the course of the primary election. Fundraising and spending in this election could easily outpace the previous record of over $40 million spent in 2018.

Primary Presents Tough Questions for the General Election
Will the governor’s race be seen as a battle between two Democratic candidates and one Republican candidate? Or will the race be viewed as one union/progressive candidate against two conservative candidates? Will non-affiliated Johnson take more votes from Democratic nominee Kotek or from Republican nominee Drazan?

Taking the Local Approach
If we’ve learned anything about polls since the stunning election of Donald Trump in 2016, it’s that they’re best approached with skepticism. But even so armed, it’s impossible to read the results of a voter poll released this month by Oregon Public Broadcasting as anything but bad news for Oregon’s political establishment. Bigly bad news.

Will the Red Wave Skip the West Coast?
West Coast Democrats and Republicans, alike, are holding their collective breath to see if the 2022 midterm elections will deliver a series of triumphs by the GOP. In key races in places like Los Angeles and Portland, voters are fed up and electoral dynamics are shaping up to be a challenge for Democrats.

The Pursuit of Trust
In early January 2017, my cell phone continuously buzzed with notifications as friends began to send me images from news of the protest happening in downtown Portland. The event was aptly named “Flag Burning Extravaganza” and was a permitted protest by the City of Portland.
The violent images of people breaking windows, vandalizing the city, and burning countless American flags in the middle of our town square made my blood begin to boil.
